Hamlet’s Blackberry
 |
This month’s published document for The Orange Pages examines the book Hamlet’s BlackBerry, by William Powers, which outlines “A Practical Philosophy for Building a Good Life in the Digital Age” by answering questions such as:
- What do digital devices actually do for us and to us?
- How can digital devices be used optimally to enhance our lives?
- How, if conceptualized and/or utilized inappropriately, can digital devices actually decrease our productivity and lessen the quality of our lives?
|
As health care marketers and marketing researchers, we should read the book on two levels. First, it can help us learn how we personally should use digital devices. When we employ digital technology in our work, more is not necessarily better. We should not equate our own busyness with productivity but rather strike a comfortable balance between connectedness and focus.
Second, we can learn how digital technology applies to the key stakeholders in health care. If we keep in mind principles such as optimizing (not necessarily maximizing) connectedness and amount of information, instead of the more-and-faster-is-better mentality that most people bring to the digital space, we will have a much clearer picture of which applications of digital technology make sense for our stakeholders to employ and/or for us to provide.

Are You Receiving The Orange Pages?
The monthly issue-based discussions that we publish in this newsletter can also be distributed to you in hardcopy format via a complimentary subscription-based resource we publish for our clients called The Orange Pages. The format is a three-ring binder designed to hold packets of content that we will develop and distribute on a variety of topics. Content packets will come to you in an easy-to-identify (and appropriately colored) orange envelope and be delivered on a monthly basis. The materials will be three-hole punched for convenient one-click assembly into your binder.
