GfK HealthCare to Present at the ISPOR
14th Annual European Congress Nov. 5-8
We invite you to join GfK HealthCare Nov. 5-8 in Madrid at the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) 14th Annual European Congress.
In keeping with the conference theme, Rational Health Care Decision Making in Challenging Economic Times, GfK HealthCare will present the following research-based poster on Monday,
Nov. 7, highlighting opportunities and challenges for market acceptance and usage of biosimilars:

Poster: Biosimilars Are Not Generics From Payer Perspective
Julian Shepelev, Pricing & Market Access Consultant; Marco Rauland, Ph.D., Head of Pricing & Market Access; and Chris Krattiger, Head of Global Marketing, GfK HealthCare
This poster will demonstrate the following results of a GfK HealthCare study using both primary and secondary research. Primary research was conducted with payers, physicians and pharmaceutical and biosimilar manufacturers.
While the U.S. and EU are currently the largest consumers of biologics in the world, other markets are expected to see strong growth in their usage over the next few years. Although many biologics are expected to go off-patent in the near future creating an attractive opportunity for biosimilars, their complex structure makes the manufacturing process extremely difficult. In addition, with EU legislation currently requiring Phase I-III clinical trials to be conducted for all new biosimilars, the developmental costs and barriers to entry are high.
With respect to costs per treatment, the price of biologics is significantly higher than for small molecules, creating a use-limiting factor in many markets. For this reason, biosimilars are recognized by payers and physicians as being cost-effective in the sense of being able to provide the same treatment but at a lower cost. However, payers confirm that cost savings alone will not ensure access for biosimilars, and physicians are hesitant to adopt biosimilars because of safety and efficacy concerns.
In conclusion, with the use of biologics rapidly increasing, patent expiries expected to occur in the near future and low numbers of competitors, the production of biosimilars presents companies with a new and attractive market. While companies face several challenges when entering the market, biosimilars are recognized and treated differently from generics by payers. With drug costs increasing and concerns over the safety and efficacy of biosimilars, reduced costs together with clinical reassurance will enable broader acceptance and usage of biosimilars in most markets.
